Fall 2017

Title: Marketing and Communications Intern
Reports To: Samantha Rodrigues, Specialist, URI Alumni Association
Working Hours: 8 hours per week (3 Credits)

Roles and Responsibilities: Intern performs a wide variety of critical tasks in the day-to-day marketing and communications operations of the Alumni Association office.

The intern will work closely with the programming team. Primary intern responsibilities include:

  • Create unique content for web, including conducting alumni interviews, creating contests, and polls
  • Monitor and post on social networks
  • Social media and website analytics
  • Assist in the creation of creative event promotion, including event signage, e-mail campaigns, and video
  • Assist in the distribution or delivery of marketing materials
  • Contribute to website design
  • Participate in programming meetings, as well as opportunities for other various meetings, as seen appropriate by advisor

Interns are expected to produce accurate, timely, and engaging content for the Alumni Association’s social media channels and website. They are expected to be receptive to editing of their work, understanding that this is a learning opportunity. Guidelines will be given on how to approach particular stories or situations and how to work with various aspects of the community.

Qualifications: Intern candidates must possess strong writing skills and have the willingness to improve their skills through their work. This intern should be prepared to work in a fast-paced team environment, and will finish the internship having gained broad experience in various aspects of marketing, communications, alumni relations, and event planning. It is essential that applicants to this position have excellent communication skills, demonstrate creativity, and understand the importance of attending to even the smallest details. Excellent oral communication skills are a must since interns will need to interview and speak with alumni. We are seeking an intern who can participate in various stages of print, and web, and social media marketing with strong written skills to develop content for various web and social media needs.

Since interns represent the Alumni Association, University, and its administration, they are expected to dress professionally and appropriately during office hours.

Reliability is critical, so they are expected to call or email the office when they will be late or absent because of illness, academic commitments or family emergencies.

Requirements: Students applying for this internship should be a Sophomore, Junior, or Senior majoring in Communications, Marketing, or Public Relations. This person should have excellent verbal and written communication skills, with extensive knowledge of web and social media, and Microsoft Office. Photoshop, InDesign, Google Analytics, and/or HTML experience is a bonus, and applicants possessing this experience will be given priority consideration.

Majors: Sophomore, Junior, or Senior level - Marketing, Public Relations, Communications

This position is flexible in terms of days and hours, as well as fulfilling the experience you are seeking. Roles and responsibilities can be modified to meet your goals for development.
