AAOE Special Projects Fund Internship

Description of Internship Project:

Promote awareness, support, and access to osteopathic medicine in Rhode Island by enhancing RISOPS membership and visibility of RISOPS activities in the state.

How does the project promote and support the osteopathic profession?

The mission statement of RISOPS: RISOPS is committed to providing advocacy, education and support for physicians practicing the distinct philosophy of osteopathic medicine in Rhode Island and the patients they serve.

Activities of RISOPS include regular educational dinner meetings, an annual educational conference, conducting undergraduate student interviews for possible admission to osteopathic medical school, collaboration with hospitals providing osteopathic graduate medical education, advocacy for osteopathic physicians (in matters pertaining to medical licensure, insurance companies, hospitals, etc.), monitoring and sponsoring legislation, and supporting political candidates favorable to the osteopathic profession. The ability to provide these services effectively, particularly in a “small state” with a limited number of osteopathic physicians, requires a robust membership and deeply committed members to serve on the Board and committees.

The need for an innovative marketing campaign is evident, particularly highlighting the benefits
provided by RISOPS on behalf of all RI DO’s. Increasingly, the effective use of social media has proven to be an essential means to achieving this goal. A RISOPS marketing intern charged with raising awareness of how RISOPS benefits osteopathic physicians, improving membership within RISOPS, and strengthening cohesion of osteopathic physicians within the state would be an invaluable resource to the organization and the osteopathic profession.

Goals and Objectives:

• Raising awareness of how RISOPS benefits osteopathic physicians, improving membership within RISOPS, and strengthening cohesion of osteopathic physicians within the state.

Intern job function and responsibilities would include:

• Preparing news releases, award nominations, fact sheets, member biographies
• Assist in preparation on biannual newsletter
• Enhancing RISOPS social media presence and website
• Publicize RISOPS educational, advocacy, charitable, legislative and other related activities
• Engage with Board members on a regular basis to brainstorm ideas for new and innovative marketing and social media campaigns
• Assist with gathering data for marketing reports and supporting a variety of marketing and advertising programs
• Conduct surveys to determine reasons for membership, preferences for RISOPS initiatives, and if not a member, why not?
• Maintain active database of new and established osteopathic licensees and systematically target non-members to join
• Provide insight and recommendations to the RISOPS Board regarding how other similar organizations have successfully addressed the challenges of declining membership
• Assist in soliciting dedicated, energetic members to actively serve on RISOPS committees and Board of Trustees
